Xelect™

The Xelect utility assists you in the creation of derivative indexes, or transforming entries in an existing index. Operations include: selection based on type of entry or search criteria, extraction of the whole entry or just some of its fields, transposition of headings, and substitutions. With Xelect, many operations can be performed on index entries simultaneously. Xelect allows you to retain the accuracy of the entries by eliminating the need to enter them again.

While these types of operations are often available in indexing software, such as CINDEX, Xelect allows you to predefine these operations for processing in a batch mode saving you repetitive manual entry of multiple commands. Since the operations are performed simultaneously, you get the entries you need quickly.

Features

  • Xelect understands files in CINDEX or Sky Index format.
  • You can select entries based on the type of reference they contain: page or citation reference; see cross reference; see also cross reference; or, any combination.
  • Match criteria can be specified to select entries whose fields contain one or more of the appropriate criteria.
  • Matching can be limited to certain heading levels or the page field.
  • Matching can also be restricted to a range of page numbers, or by the record numbers of the entries.
  • Matching can be restricted to certain types (cross references or page reference) of entries as well.
  • Headings can be transposed, e.g. flipping the main heading with the first-level subheading.
  • The page fields can be altered, appended to, prefixed with text, completely replaced, or entirely erased.
  • Duplicate records can be eliminated.
  • Page fields can be stripped of “et seq.” phrases.
  • Headings can be deleted from entries either at the top or the bottom of the heading hierarchy.
  • Heading or subheadings can also be added to entries.  They can be added: prior to the current main heading; below the current main heading; or, after the current deepest heading level.
  • The selected entries can be output with all fields retained, or further transformed by Xelect in the output file in various ways: main headings with only the page fields; the page fields with the main headings (these two fields transposed); or, page fields with their entry’s record number. This latter mode is particularly useful when you want to review complex page fields, such as legal citations, for syntactical correctness.
