CaseRev™

Specifically designed for legal indexers, the CaseRev utility reduces the time and effort required to prepare tables of cases. Simply put, CaseRev eliminates the need to key reversed cites into a table or index. Just key the forward cites and let CaseRev generate the reversals and many of the cross references automatically. This not only saves you time by eliminating multiple keying, but it actually improves the accuracy of your entries so proofreading time is kept to a minimum. [Note: this product is intended for use with case citations found in the U.S.]

CaseRev can create cross references for classes of case names, such as “In Re”, and for more complicated forms of party names containing common aliases, such as dba and aka.

Features

  • CaseRev can handle multiple input files within one processing step.
  • Configuration files can be set up for different projects to control the styles and types of cases and reversals to perform as well as which types of cross references to generate.
  • CaseRev recognizes simple “plaintiff v. defendant” cases as well as case names with phrases, such as “In Re”, “Ex Parte”, or “ex rel.”, and understands how to reverse them.
  • It is even smart enough not to reverse “Smith v. Smith”!
  • You can also specify levels of government to treat specially, or special phrases, such as “State v.”, “Estate of” or “Grand Jury Subpoena”.
  • The case names to reverse can appear in any of the heading level or in the page field.
  • CaseRev can flag case names which were unreversible. This often happens when the forward cites were not entered properly.
  • If you have tables of cases with reversals already in them, CaseRev can extract the forward citations for you. Thus, you only need to maintain the forwards in your master file from now on.
  • CaseRev will preview the reversals for you showing the forward cite with any reversals it deems appropriate to create. This allows you to change your configuration files if necessary, particularly when you have added new types of cases not previously in the table or index.
  • Other options let you output all reversals to combine with your forwards or to proof the reversal process, or you can output only the appropriate forwards and reversals to a separate file.
  • CaseRev can also create an indented table of cases once you have the forward and reversed cites combined. Three types of common indentation styles are provided for. This option includes providing the alternate sequencing coding need to properly order the indented case name fragments within their sublevels.
